Chennai, March 17: Even when Vijayakanth is in a dilemma whether to contest the polls in an alliance or go it alone, his party cadres are ready to campaign across the state. A group of transgenders, also members of the DMDK, called on him at the party office on Tuesday and expressed their willingness to campaign for the party in the state.

Clad in a yellow saree, the flag colour of DMDK, the transgenders said they had already campaigned for the DMDK during the civic polls. “We met Captain to express our views and help us campaign for him,” says Radhika, one among the 15 transgenders who met Vijayakanth.

It may be recalled that the transgenders had voting rights since 2004. With an estimated population of nearly two lakh in the state, transgenders have a major role in deciding the vote bank. Parties like the VCK, BJP and DMDK have given memberships to the transgender community.

“Political empowerment is necessary for transgenders. It is one way of making our presence felt,” said Priya Babu, a transgender rights activist. Ms Priya Babu is the person who had filed a writ petition in the Madras high court five years ago demanding voting rights for transgenders.

Now, all the two lakh transgenders possess voter ID cards that designates them a gender of their choice. “We had got our ID cards in 2004 and had cast our votes in the 2006 state polls and civic polls,” Ms Priya Babu said.

தேமுதிகவுக்காக பிரசாரம் செய்யப் போவதாக அறிவித்த அரவாணிகளை, கட்சித் தலைவர் விஜயகாந்த் வாழ்த்தி வழியனுப்பினார்.

தேமுதிக தலைமைக் கழக அலுவலகத்திற்கு நேற்று அரவாணிகள் சிலர் திரண்டு வந்தனர். அவர்கள் சேலத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள்.

அனைவரும் விஜயகாந்த்தை சந்திக்க விருப்பம் தெரிவித்தனர். இதையடுத்து அவர்களை விஜயகாந்த் சந்தித்தார். அப்போது அரவாணிகள், தாங்கள் தமிழகம் முழுவதும் தேமுதிகவுக்காக பட்டி தொட்டியெங்கும் பிரசாரம் செய்யப் போவதாக தெரிவித்தனர்.

இதையடுத்து அவர்களை ஆசிர்வாதம் செய்து அனுப்பி வைத்தார் விஜயகாந்த்.

பிரசாரம் செய்யப் போவது குறித்து அரவாணிகள் கூறுகையில், விஜயகாந்த் தலைமையிலான தே.மு.தி.க.வை ஆதரித்து பிரசாரம் மேற்கொள்வது என்று ஏற்கனவே நாங்கள் முடிவு செய்திருந்தோம். அதன்படி தே.மு.தி.க. தலைவர் விஜயகாந்தை சந்தித்து வாழ்த்து பெற்றிருக்கிறோம் என்றனர்.
